Former PLC Instructor Leads Longmont City Council Charge Against State of Colorado

July 31, 2012 Twitter

Former PLC Instructor and CU Law Grad Brian Bagley is one of the members of the Longmont City Council which now finds itself the target of a threatened law suit from the State of Colorado over oil and gas development, specificially around the issue of hydaulic fracturing _ or fracking.

From the Denver Post

"The ink was barely dry on Longmont's new oil and gas regulations when the Colorado Oil and Gas Conservation Commission directed its attorney to sue the city.

Not that anyone in city government was particularly surprised: Both the COGCC's attorney and, later, the executive director of the state department that oversees the COGCC, the Colorado Department of Natural Resources, had sent warning letters telling Longmont to back down.

It's not the first time a local government has been sued over rules they put in place regarding oil and gas development within their boundaries. But it is believed to be the first time that the state, not an oil and gas company or a private landowner, has done the suing itself."
